The operationalization of the Bachuma Livestock Quarantine Station (BLQS) is set to create jobs and unlock new economic opportunities for Taita Taveta residents, with at least 50 direct jobs, hundreds of indirect opportunities, and a boost in fodder production expected once the facility becomes fully functional.

Taita Taveta Deputy Governor Christine Kilalo says the project will help farmers access better paying international markets while emphasizing the need for transparency and community involvement, especially on land ownership matters.

County Agriculture and Livestock CECM Katuu Mzenge says working closely with the community will ensure the project improves livestock breeds and increases farmers earnings.

Director of Veterinary Services Dr. Abraham Sangula added that the station will enhance certification and disease control, enabling local cattle, sheep, goats, and camels to meet global export standards.

The BLQS is 80% complete and will function strictly as a regulatory facility offering quarantine, inspections, disease surveillance, and certification.

Officials noted that the station will strengthen Kenya’s position in export markets such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Qatar, and Mauritius, securing more reliable and profitable markets for local livestock farmers.

The multi-agency team committed to continued stakeholder engagement and coordinated efforts between the county and national governments as the leasing process progresses.
