TAVETA FIGHTS AGAINST SICKLE CELL DISEASE WITH MAJOR TRAINING BOOST
By Patience Samba
Taita
Taveta County residents living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) stand to benefit
significantly from a major new initiative aimed at improving the quality and
accessibility of care right at the local level.
According to Sickle
Cell Federation of Kenya (SFK) is proud to join hands with the County
Government of Taita Taveta and the Africa Sickle Cell Organization (ASCO) to
strengthen the fight against the disease in the county because forty dedicated healthcare
providers from various facilities across the county are taking part in a training programme.
Furthermore the intensive 3 day
course is designed to create a sustained, high quality
network of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) specialists within the county by focusing on
three critical areas improving early detection of Sickle
Cell Disease (SCD) through Point of Care Testing (POCT enhancing comprehensive patient management at
all levels of care and building a strong network of trainers who will deliver
continuous medical education to colleagues in primary healthcare facilities.
This
vital capacity building program is generously
supported by Fondation Pierre Fabre and the Agence Française de Dévelopment
under the KETAN Project, which seeks to expand early diagnosis, strengthen
holistic care, and uplift the livelihoods of families affected by the Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).

Meanwhile, by building the capacity of these frontline health workers, the community takes a major step toward reducing life threatening complications, improving patient outcomes, and empowering communities across the county because together the partners move closer to a Kenya where every person living with sickle cell disease has access to timely, quality care.
