MWATATE COMMUNITY DAY: CLEAN-UP, HEALTH, AND CIVIC SERVICES UNITE RESIDENTS

By Patience Samba

Residents of Mwatate from Taita Taveta County stand to gain significantly from the town clean up exercise and the various community services offered during the event, which drew large crowds and showcased the strength of community led development.

The clean up campaign not only helped refresh the town’s environment but also promoted a culture of responsibility among residents. By taking part in removing waste and beautifying public spaces, community members contributed to a cleaner, healthier town. A cleaner environment reduces the spread of diseases, improves air quality, and creates a more attractive space for businesses and visitors benefits that will be felt long after the exercise ends.

Beyond environmental improvements, the additional services offered during the event will have direct, long term advantages for residents. The blood donation drive ensured that local health facilities can strengthen their emergency response capacity, meaning more lives can be saved in critical situations. Residents who gave blood also contributed to strengthening the county’s medical preparedness.

Voter registration and National Identification Card services enabled many locals especially youth and first time voters to secure the documents they need to participate fully in civic processes. With more residents registered, the community will have a stronger voice in elections and improved access to government services that require proper identification.

Sensitization on the Social Health Authority (SHA) helped clarify the benefits of the new health insurance system, ensuring more residents understand how to access medical coverage for themselves and their families. Increased awareness and enrollment will reduce out of pocket medical expenses, making healthcare more affordable and accessible.

The involvement of partners such as the IEBC, Taita Salt Lick Resort, Qwetu Sacco, Community Health Promoters, and local football groups also strengthened community networks. These partnerships encourage continued collaboration on future projects, empowering residents to work together for shared progress.

According to the County Executive Committee Member for Devolution and Public Administration, the event highlighted the importance of community ownership in driving sustainable development. Organizers echoed the same sentiment, noting that initiatives led by the community are essential in promoting cleanliness, public health, and civic responsibility across the county.

However, the residents of Mwatate will benefit from a cleaner environment, better civic engagement, stronger health systems, and improved community cohesion making the event a meaningful step toward a healthier and more empowered society.
