PROJECTS

Residents of Kitui County
are set to benefit significantly from a series of development initiatives
announced by President William Ruto during his recent tour of the region. The programmes
are expected to improve healthcare, expand economic opportunities, enhance
infrastructure and uplift living standards across the county.
In the health sector,
families will enjoy better access to quality services as the national and
county governments work together to strengthen universal healthcare. Public
hospitals in Kitui are being fitted with modern medical equipment, including
MRI machines, CT scanners, X-ray and ultrasound machines, allowing residents to
receive advanced diagnosis and treatment without travelling long distances. The
planned construction of the Nzamba Kitonga Memorial Hospital in Mutito,
supported by a Sh200 million national contribution, will bring specialised
services closer to communities and ease pressure on existing facilities.
Expanded primary healthcare services under the Social Health Authority will
further ensure that more households can access essential care near their homes.
Economic prospects for
traders and farmers are expected to improve with the opening of the new
Kamuwongo fresh produce market. Designed to accommodate more than 200 traders,
the market offers cold rooms, an ICT hub, cafeteria, shower rooms and baby
nursing rooms, helping to create a modern and supportive business environment.
This will reduce post arvest losses, increase earnings for farmers and create more job
opportunities for youth and women. The market is one of 11 similar facilities
under construction in Kitui, signalling broader economic revitalisation across
the county.
Residents will also benefit
from the issuance of thousands of title deeds. With 30,000 already released and
another 42,000 on the way, many families will gain legal ownership of their
land. This will allow them to invest more confidently, use their property as
collateral for loans and avoid land disputes, ultimately boosting household
economic stability.
Infrastructure development
is set to improve mobility and open up new economic corridors. The tarmacking
of the 13km Kamuwongo–Kandwia road, part of a larger road network connecting
Mwingi to major regional routes, will lower transport costs for farmers, reduce
travel time and make it easier for traders to move goods to markets. Improved
roads will also facilitate access to schools, hospitals and emergency services.
Housing and education will
receive a major boost through the Sh15 billion allocation for 6,000 affordable
housing units in Kitui and Sh1.6 billion for student hostels in universities,
technical colleges and KMTC campuses. These investments will create jobs while
offering safer, more affordable accommodation for families and students.
Additionally, the earmarked
Sh2.3 billion to connect 20,000 homes to electricity in the 2026/27 financial
year will expand access to reliable power. Electrification will support small
businesses, improve home safety, enhance digital learning and reduce reliance
on expensive or unsafe energy sources.
Together, these initiatives
are expected to transform the daily lives of Kitui residents, strengthen the
local economy and create new opportunities for growth across the county.
