Tourists flocking to the Coast region ahead of the December holiday celebrations are raising hopes for a busy festive season. However, hoteliers are now urging the government to review key policies and introduce tax subsidies that would help boost the tourism industry.

Speaking during a colourful cake mixing event at a resort in Mombasa County, hoteliers called on the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) and security agencies to strengthen their operations during the festive period. They noted that many tourists continue to face challenges, including inconsistent power supply and security concerns, which disrupt their stay.

The stakeholders further lamented the lack of proper infrastructure in the region, saying it has become a major setback for the industry. Roads leading to key tourist sites remain in poor condition, limiting accessibility and lowering the quality of the visitor experience.

Additionally, the hoteliers criticised what they termed inadequate marketing strategies by the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB). They argued that Kenya’s tourism sector requires more aggressive local and international promotion to effectively compete with other global destinations.

Despite these challenges, the industry players expressed optimism that with timely interventions and enhanced collaboration between government agencies and stakeholders, the upcoming festive season could still record strong performance.
