NEW AGRICULTURE AND LIVESTOCK COURSES TO BOOST YOUTH SKILLS,FOOD SECURITY AND BLUE ECONOMY IN TAITA TAVETA.
Residents of Taita Taveta County are set to benefit from a new set of Agriculture and Livestock courses to be introduced at Taita Taveta Technical and Vocational Training College, as the county intensifies efforts to empower youth, improve food security, and grow the local economy including the often-overlooked Blue Economy sector.
The initiative unveils following a joint visit by key County Executive Committee Member Dawson Katuu for Agriculture,Livestock,Cooperatives and Blue Economy,Shadrack Mutungi for Youth Affairs,Sports,Gender and Social services and Chief Officer Harrison Mkala for Special Programs.
According to Katuu, the courses will Equip young people with practical farming,livestock and agribusiness skills to Promote youth entrepreneurs,Strengthen Taita Taveta’s role as a food producing hub for the region and beyond,encourage innovation in climate smart farming and livestock management. This directly translates to more food,more jobs and more income for local families especially those in rural areas.
However, the new courses will also touch on skills related to the Blue Economy a sector that includes aquaculture (fish farming), sustainable water resource use, and the economic development of freshwater bodies.For residents living near water bodies or in areas with potential for irrigation and aquaculture, this means training in fish farming and water water based agriculture,access to new income streams through aquaculture cooperatives or small businesses,sustainable use of natural water resources, protecting livelihoods and the environment
By introducing Blue Economy Education, the County is helping young people tap into opportunities around inland fisheries,water management and agri-water innovation which are critical in a region increasingly affected by climate change.
Mutungi also stressed the importance of collaboration across departments and communities to ensure that technical institutions like Taveta TVET continue to grow because the institutions are more than schools.
College Principal Martin Makoha, welcomed the plan, pointing out that Taveta’s strong agricultural base makes it the perfect setting for hands-on training because they have 525 students now and they want to expand and reach more youth
However,with the new courses, Taita Taveta County is investing in its young people preparing a generation of skilled farmers, agripreneurs, aquaculture specialists, and food producers who can feed the communities,start their own businesses,create jobs for others and drive sustainable economic growth.
